for the city never sleeps.
The sound of dice rolls across the tables on the corner,
hookah smoke rises alongside Umm Kulthum’s voice.
No… perhaps I only imagine it,
for her voice has long faded,
like everything else I summon from memory.
A café for men,
with no place for a woman wandering alone at night.
All that remains is the rhythm of the night,
a nocturnal walk in step with the hands of the clock.
