Elles Cinema Screens Daughters of the Dust

|

Elles Cinema hosted a screening of Daughters of the Dust, directed by American filmmaker Julie Dash, followed by a discussion with film critic Norhan Emad El Din. The discussion offered space to exchange ideas and reflections on the film, its visual language, and the questions it raises.

Released in 1991 and set in 1902, the film follows the Peazant family, members of the Gullah community, descendants of Africans who were enslaved in the United States. As some family members prepare to leave their islands and move to the mainland, tensions emerge between generations around identity, belonging, migration, and the preservation of cultural memory and traditions.
